Focus, Meaning & Action Required for Making Decisions

This important decision-making model is from the work of world-renowned Guru, Tony Robbins. In every situation, be it professional or personal, this approach to decision making will lead to important consequences. Let’s Take a look.
Decision #1: What we decide to FOCUS ON
What we focus on WE FEEL. i.e., Focus = Feelings. This irrespective of whether the situation is true or not.
As Tony explains, “if you focus on the worst-case scenario, you’re going to feel fearful and sick to your stomach. If you focus on the best case, you’re going to feel confident. Again, whether it’s true or not doesn’t matter. What we focus on creates our feelings.”
Let’s understand this 1st decision with a couple of examples.
If a close friend is diagnosed with cancer, where does your focus go? Are you going to focus on this situation being dreadful and leading to your friend suffering and ultimate death or are you going to focus on your friend having a great doctor and a group of loving and supportive family and friend that are going to help your friend become well quickly?
Hence depending on your focus, you are going to feel dreadful or hopeful.
Let’s look at a business example, let’s say you discover the Pure Nectar Juice franchise opportunity. You like the business, you have been thinking of having your own business for a long time, you have saved money to make such an investment. It is time to decide to move forward. Do you focus on all the things that could go wrong with having your own business? or do you focus on the success you can achieve?

Decision # 2: What does this MEAN
Meaning = Emotion, and your emotions equal the quality of your life.
As Tony explains “As soon as we focus on something, our brain must make another decision, and that is: What does this mean? This choice directly controls your quality of life. Because as soon as our brain focuses on something, we give it meaning. And whether that meaning is positive or negative completely shapes our life.”
We are the creators of our own meaning, so we must control what meaning we attach to any situation. If we don’t then the world outside will dictate to us.
As we attach meaning, what angle do we come from? Are we saying God is punishing me? Are we saying God is challenging me? Or are we saying God is providing me with the opportunity to Grow?
Or asking in a different way, is this person insulting me? Coaching me? Or loving me?
As Tony says, “The meaning you choose will radically change how you feel and what you decide to do.”
Let’s look at an example of someone who loves the Pure Nectar business and is inspired and excited to join the business. However, they are short some funds required for the investment and the banks are not supportive. If they look at the situation as an opportunity to grow, they may discover different ways to fund the business that had not been considered previously. On the other hand, if they see the situation as ‘this is too difficult’ and give up without trying.
Decision #3: What am I going to DO
This is the make-or-break choice that defines your life, the one that leads either to massive action or accepting life as it is.
As Tony explains, “The emotions that grow out of meaning powerfully affect what actions we take. If one person is infuriated by an incident at their job and someone else is inspired by the very same situation, how do you think they’ll respond-the same way or different ways?”
Let’s go back to the 1st example of Pure Nectar. You have found Pure Nectar; you are excited about the business. You recognize that the business requires an investment that is reaching the limit of your financial ability as well as the risk of the business not doing as well as you hope to or taking a little longer than you hoped, instead of being consumed by fear, you see the business providing you with great opportunity to have a meaningful life, build great wealth for your family, bring a healthy lifestyle to your community, create job opportunities, become a magnet of the community.

This versus someone else, who may also like the business, but attach fearful emotions to the decision and hence will likely not take any actions and their life will continue as it has been without any meaningful change.
We are faced with many decisions every day, some small, some large and some with huge implications.
